Bodily Fluids

1.formation of the Bodily Fluids and it's metabolic function

Bodily Fluids refers to the normal fluids existing within our body. Sometimes, in a physiologic viewpoint, it is mentioned as a synonym for all the Water component constituting the human body. Broadly, it shares characteristics with Water, Eum, Dampness, etc. Specifically it refers to the crystalized production of Water property mainly from respiration and food intake. Below is a diagram showing how bodily fluids are formed and transformed through the human body.

There's a phrase from Huang Di Nei Jing that clearly explains the above drawn process. Here is the translation:

When nutrition from food enters the Stomach, it activates the flow of Essence and Ki through our body. In reaching upward to the Spleen (Middle Burner), it disperses Essence. (Spleen regulates the transportation of bodily fluids for the Stomach)

Then, reaching upward to the Lung (Upper Burner), the Water metabolism of the human body is regulated. Coming downward to the Urinary Bladder, it excretes the remnants from the above process, and this overall flow of bodily fluids through the human body enables sufficient dispersion of Essence around the body and smooth flow of Meridians as well.

3. Division of Bodily Fluids

Bodily Fluids can be divided into five according to the Five Phases. Below is a table showing the five different kinds and their specific meaning. Other than these five, there are also other fluids such as gastric juice, intestinal juice, tissue fluids, joint fluids, urine, etc.

Five Phases

Formation and pathology

Wood

Liver

tear

DongEuiBoGam expalins the pathology as: rief or anxiousness moves the mind and also Jang and Bu, which then rings the Meridians, thus opening up the pathway for tear to exit.

Fire

Heart

sweat

originates from Heart-Fire opening up the skin.

Soil

Spleen

waterly saliva

DongEuiBoGam  refers to it as "drivel", originating from Spleen-Heat.

Metal

Lung

snivel

this incessant viscous nose-discharge originates from Lung-Heat. (It may also come from Heat within Gall Bladder ascending up to brain.)

Water

Kidney

sputum (turbid saliva)

produced in Kidney, it exits through gum.  Coldness in Kidney induces decrease in the amount of sputum, while Heat increases it.

4. Pathologic aspects related to bodily fluids

As mentioned above, bodily fluids(津液) is a general name for all the fluids existing within our body. When in pathologic condition, it implies that there is a problem related to the Water metabolism within the body. Of the most, Phlegm and Congestion(痰飮: Dahm Eum) is, with a little exaggeration, said to be a pathogenic factor for nine out of ten clinical cases.

*comparison of Dahm and congestion:

Dahm(痰) is produced when bodily fluids is overly heated.

Congestion(飮) is produced when drunken beverage stays without being digested.

External manifestations of Dahm and Congestion are:

chill along the back, development of dark circles under the eyes and on the eyelids,

and reluctance to drink beverage, to name a few.

DonEuiBoGam divides Dahm and Congestion into ten, all of whose treatment are based on relieving otherwise stagnant Ki. (Basically slow-down in Ki flow is regarded as number one pathogenic factor for Dahm and Congestion.)

Below are prescriptions from DonEuiBogam for treating Dahm and Congestion:

1. Decoction that pulls Phlegm back to its place(導痰湯) treats Wind-Phlegm.

2. Decoction that modifies the Middle Burner and shears Phlegm(理中割痰湯), a medication for Heat-phlegm, is prescribed for Heated Stomach.

For the maintenance of healthy condition, bodily fluids should be produced well and lead to dispersion around and body and complete discharge of the remnants. Otherwise, Dahm and Congestion may bring about other disorders.
