Diagrams of Relationships Between Five Phases Elements
The diagrams below show the interactive relationships between components of the Five Phases.
We thought this would be useful in reading our articles.
The diagrams have been excerpted from Prof. Ahn Kyoo-seok's "The Essence of Oriental Medicine"
We give our special thanks to Prof. Ahn

The arrows on the diagram shows interpromoting relationships between the Five Phases. The arrows indicate which element promotes which. The promoter element is called the "Mother element", and the recipient element is called the "Son element"
The above diagram shows the Overacting relationships. The element at the base of each arrow checks the element at the tip. However, this doesn't necessarilly indicate oppression; checking also acts to promote further growth of the checked element at times, and the sufficiently strengthened checked element may disrupt its checker, as shown on the next diagram. The diagrams must be interpreted with such functions in mind.
This diagram shows the Counteracting relationship. A counteracting relationship implies that an element is much stronger by comparison than its checking element. This may happen either when a single element is strengthened enough to counteract its checker, or when an element is too weak to check its target. It is referred to as being Humiliated or Insulted.
