International Symposium on Cooperation of East-West medicine in the 21th century held at Kyunghee University

"coexistence and cooperation of traditional and modern medicine"

showing a path for medical education in the cooperative medical era

Medical foundations claiming cooperation between Eastern and Western medicine have increased dramatically in recent years.

What can be called true cooperation between the two medicines?

How can modern and traditional medicine bond together in an age when only the most up-to-date scientific discoveries may survive?

In which forms have cooperative medicine developed in other countries?

Regarding this growth of cooperative medicine, what should be considered and improved in educating future doctors?




Kyunghee Medical Center holds an 'International Symposium on Cooperation of East-West medicine in the 21th century' (Executive commitee chairperson Yoo,Myung-Chul, President of the Medical bureau at Kyunghee Univ. and director of Kyunghee Med. center) to seek an answer to these questions.

This symposium, scheduled for the 25th and 26th of July, will be held at the

종합강의동. The purpose of this event is to look at the current situation of the third medicine(cooperative medicine), share info on experiences with cooperative medicine, and seek improvements with scholars from America, Japan, China and Taiwan.

The symposium will go on to look at present education in all fields of medicine including Eastern and Western medicine, and dentistry for the improvement of the third medicine. Improvements will be sought for. Students from Eastern and Western Medical Colleges and also the College of Dentistry will be present to participate in the discussions.


An abstract on the presentations scheduled

On the 25th, ①Cooperative medicine in China(Park, Byung-Kyu, Prof. at Kwanganmun Med. center,China), ②Complementary experience of Acupuncture and Orthopedics in America(Kim, Jung-Kil, on the board at Potter memorial hospital, Indiana, U.S.A) ③Current status of Coperative medicine in China and guidelines for improvement(Yao, Shu Yuan. Chief of Orthopedics at Tianjin No.1 Central Hospital, China) ④Current status of the Third medicine in Korea and outlooks(Park, Jun-Ha, director of Dongsuwon Eastern Medical Center) under the subtitle 'Cooperative medicine in different nations' will be presented in separate sessions.

Fourteen other thesises will be presented on the same day under the subtitle 'Cooperative medicine in practice'. ⑤Acupuncture in Urology (Watanabe, Prof. at Meiji Univ., Japan), ⑥Effects of electroacupunture in pain alleviation after lower abdominal surgery(Im, So-Kyung, Prof. at Taiwan Chinese medical academy), ⑦Antiinflammatory efects of Bee venom for rheumatic 관절염(Yang, Hyung-In, Dept. of Rheumatic Internal medicine at Kyunghee Med. center), ⑧Effects of Eastern medicinal ingredients on allergic rhinitis patients(Joh, Jung-Sang, Lee, Gun-Hee, Hong, Seung-Wook, Dept. of otorhinolaryngology at Kyunghee Med. center), ⑨Results of research on Eastern medicinal ingredients from a 根擄 中心醫學 view(Cho, Ki-Ho, Prof. at Dept. of Eastern Internal Med. 2), ⑩Curing Infective 불유합 through cooperative medicine(Yao, Shu Yuan, Chief of Dept. of otorhinolaryngology at Tianjin No.1 Central Hospital, China), ⑪Current status of cooperative medicine(Park, Sang-Dong, director of East-West Eastern medical hospital), ⑫reality on cooperative medicine(Ryu, Jae Hwan, East-West med. center at Kyunghee med. center), ⑬problems of current cooperative medicine(Kim, Jin-Woo, Prof. at East-West graduate school), ⑭improvements on the system of the third medicine(Lee, Jong-Su, Prof. at Dept. of Rehabilitation) are on the list.

On the 26th, ①Guidelines for Medical Education improvement(Lee, Mu-Sang, Prof. at Yonsei Medical college), ②Improvement for Korean Medical education(Kim, Nam-Il, Prof. at Kyunghee Korean Med. college), ③Improvement for dentistry education(Lee, Ki-Su, Kyunghee Dentistry college) are to be presented, and a discussion will take place afterwards.

As many results from various researches around the globe are planned to be put forth, new blueprints for mankind's health promotion are anticipated. We hope to create a true third medicine through cooperative medicine, and a whole new field of medicine. This symposium will form a link between Eastern and Western medicine, and be a time for exploring posibilities for developments in medical technology and mankind's welfare.
